CVS/pharmacy versus Walgreen's

I have noticed that CVS seems to be getting more and more ubiquitous. It is time for me to acknowledge this upstart challenger to that paragon of drugstores, Walgreen's.

I'm not even going to pretend to be unbiased. CVS/pharmacy totally and completely sucks, for many reasons.

1. What is up with the slash? It looks so indecisive. I get that you are trying to include both concepts, that you are both a store that sells convenient items, shampoo and also medicines, etc. Yet ... Walgreen's manages to do this in one word and they look more confident. You, CVS/pharmacy look like a bunch of timid assholes and I hate you.

2. CVS/pharmacy has carpeting, which is totally creepy. Seriously. Ew! I like my pharmacies to have bright, sparkling clean shiny tile floors. Not dreary gray carpeting with red accents. I feel so much less efficient trodding on that thin layer of gray fiber. And it muffles sound! What if a super scary clown came up behind me in CVS/pharmacy?! I would have no idea! That is truly frightening. This carpeting problem is reminiscent in my mind of the problem with Circuit City. Circuit City and Best Buy are almost the same store, except Best Buy I think has more DVDs and CDs. But Circuit City is often cheaper on electronics and less full of annoying teenage boys. But yet it never seems as crowded. I think that is because their gray and red color scheme is totally depressing. Best Buy's yellow and blue makes me feel cheerful and full of delight. Circuit City's gray and red makes me long for death.

3. CVS/pharmacy does not have Pepperidge Farm products. What the eff? Why can't I get some damn goldfish at your stores? What kind of place does not stock delicious Pepperidge Farm treats? Surely such a place is the devil's playground.

4. My parents gave me Walgreen's gift cards for Christmas. If I go there, I am spending their money. If I go to CVS/pharmacy, I am spending mine.

I too hate CVS. It smells funny and gives me the scary-generico feeling...har to explain. Interesting note...I was at a marketing research type conference and one of the speakers was the lady who worked on redesigning the layout and in store marketing of CVS stores. The shelves are very short...have you noticed that? It is because the average woman is 5'4" or something and they wanted their core shopper (women) to be able to see over the top of the shelf. Why I don't know... She also came up with the "WOW" signs on the endcaps. WOW

While I respect your choice, I prefer CVS. In Massachusetts we have two, maybe three Walgreens and they are ghetto. On the other hand, we have CVS's on every corner, they have everything I need and I know where to find it.

So while I thank you for the new blog post, we will not be pharmacy shopping together anytime soon. My apologies.

My major problem with CVS is they do not have Jays Products- I'm talking Oke-Doke cheese popcorn. I find this highly offensive. I know you are all east coast, CVS, but if you're coming into my hood, stock the Chicago brands!!!

I like CVS and have no problems really! Interestingly, CVS/pharmacy works perfectly as opposed to the others. I respect your opinion, but you couldn't assure me that CVS sucks.

Are you kidding me? The carpeting is way better than tiles. No need to mop stuff up and don't have to worry about slipping and falling down.

I would like to know how cvs can hire a loss prevention manager that is terminating people for the same reasons he was terminated from walgreens. What does that say about the ethics of CVS.Or maybe he lied on his application, oh he's terminated people for that, or maybe he was sleping with an employee while they were on the clock, he's terminated for a lot less than that. His wife would like to know that.

You are all so witty and funny. I think your posts actually shine a good light on CVS/pharmacy. It makes the true problems with CVS seem petty. The true problems with CVS is their refusal to stop being cheap. They hire very inexpensive labor and treat them horribly. They understaff all of their stores. Which in turn causes the few workers they have to become stressed out and disheartened. Which then leads to bad customer service and extremely long wait times. On top of all of this they create new ridiculous programs in the pharmacy like PCI and PCR. These new wonder programs are designed for the pharmacy staff that is already extremely busy to waste time calling the patients to remind them they could refill their prescriptions. As if people can't tell when their medication is running out. (Here is a hint--- is your bottle empty?) The pharmacy staff is expected to work as a normal pharmacy would, and to be telemarketers. THAT is what the programs are designed to be. To turn well educated Pharmacists and technicians into telephone sales people. I do not know why insurances do not do something about this ridiculous program. It is more then just wasteful of CVS' time it is also wasteful of insurances time. For every 3rd person we sucker into refilling a prescription they don't need, one of them will not come pick up their prescription. So we will instead have to return the prescription to stock and refund the insurance. It's frustrating and ridiculous and CVS will continue to have untrained staff until they wake up and realise they are setting themselves up for mistakes which means LAWSUITS!

Being a Rite Aid employee who is NorCal born and raised, let me tell you some personal insight:CVS recently bought out a California institution,Longs Drugs.Though the Longs signs have yet to come down,it no longer feels like the Longs I grew up with.Their ad circulars and POS systems are now CVS-style,CVS brand items have replaced Longs brand ones on the shelves, and the loyal Longs clerks now try to get you to sign up for an Extra Care card.I don't even want to imagine how badly the Longs stores will get bowdlerized.Even Rite Aid did better with the Thrifty PayLess stores.Long live Rite Aid!
